|St. Louis County and Municiple Police Academy|
I recently taught the Leadership for Law Enforcement workshop at the St. Louis County and Municipal Police Academy, St. Louis, MO, and had the privilege of interacting with 45 law enforcement professionals representing 30 departments and agencies. The P.O.S.T. training focused on leadership styles, best practices for delegation, and strategic plan development.
What I found particularly notable was the high level of experience and professionalism this group of students have. Many of them were already in supervisory positions, and some were preparing to step into the roles, but all were very knowledgeable, open-minded, and forward thinking.
The reason this is exceptionally important to share with the LEITN members is to help debunk the notion that the ‘Old Guard’ or senior police leadership is only going to be replaced by similar close-minded or non-progressive officers. In my discussions, many of the officers expressed the fact that they anticipated moving up the chain into more and greater leadership positions; and that they intended to continue the advancement of their agency or department into the next century.
This is particularly good news for perspective officers considering joining with a professional policing agency. Instead of getting the standard line, “That’s the way we’ve always done it.”; they can look forward to hearing a logical explanation for actions, activities, procedures and standardized agency processes. This from an up and coming cadre of professional, progressive and proactive law enforcement leadership professionals.
In this time of critical and demoralizing media coverage of the America’s Law Enforcement Industry, I thought it appropriate and necessary to try to balance the scales with some ‘good news’ and positive press for those who walk behind the badge.
