For years trainers and academicians have been at odds when it came down to defining how each discipline contributed to the ‘whole’ of the individual. Whether the individual was a student, practitioner, or a combination of the two.

While attending a conference at the Post Naval Graduate School in Monterey, California, a colleague offered this insight for these two functions:

We train for the known; We teach for the unknown.

So the next time a student/practitioner asks where the value in learning comes from, help them to understand the value and the purpose behind their instruction, beyond the grade.
